about

A collection of singles and previously unreleased works.

"Chamber Music in the New World brings forth some important discussions about current music trends, particularly since Smig’s work exists in the realm of modern orchestral music. The album exhibits a restless compositional philosophy that will not resonate with listeners expecting concise, neatly packaged musical content. Smig does, however, produce interesting musical concepts and explores varied emotions throughout the album. His efforts alone are undeniably impressive." - EVAN CRANDELL [EDITOR, 24OUR MUSIC]

LINER NOTES
____________

END THE BEGINNING: A little Catholic nostalgia.

ECSTASY IN CLUBLAND: The priest daydreams during his sermon and reminisces of deacon days when he still snuck out to the clubs and got the girl.

DIRTY TOWELS: In the first movement, a crack whore steals the deacon's dirty towels at the laundromat. Unbeknownst to her, the towels have absorbed the essence of a succubus who seduced the deacon in a club. In the second movement, as the crack whore sleeps, the towel, magically animated by the combined essence of deacon and demon, performs a dance before wrapping around her head and suffocating her until her heart stops beating.

STRING QUARTET No. 2: "Music From An Imaginary Silent Movie" inspired by a screening of "Dracula" where Philip Glass and Kronos Quartet played the soundtrack live behind the movie screen.

GOD SHAVE THE QUEEN: Generic pomp written by request of an associate for a proposed project. The intro was left on his answering machine within a couple of hours. The project never came to fruition and he later moved out of state over questionable allegations.

EXSTRAVIGENT: A revised arrangement of the opening piece of "Hiss In Vinegar".

PLATYPUS: Begun as a submission for an ensemble advertising for new works before I realized that their repertoire consisted of psuedo-Schoenberg scheisse.

DOUCHE LE CLOWN: A short piece about a fat clown in public housing who spends his days chain smoking and criticizing the neighbors. He flubs a somersault from a ladder and accidentally lands backside first on the head of his daredevil wife as she practices her fire breathing routine. Nameless for years before being dubbed for a local politician who snoops on atheists and homosexuals in restrooms when not seeking scapegoats for his dope dealing constituents. He should dig up his mother's grave and recover the key to his chastity belt.

WEDDING MUSIC No. 4: "Irish Thighs". This one makes me think of aerial shots of green valleys and a former co-worker at the State Lab in Boston, a native Black Irish lab tech with a husband, three kids and a mouth like a whore who wanted to grab my ass and complained to management about my "offensive language" (never specifying words) on the same day that she announced to the room that she wanted to go home and get laid. Erin go braghless.

SOPHIA AND MARIA: Waltz music for Italian lesbians.

OH, MERE LEAF: Dance music for Ruble drinkers.

CELLO GOODBYE / PING PONG: Early string pieces from the archives, quartet / quintet, the latter a lullaby for old folks and queer ducks. Quack, quack.

GENESIS: Originally a "secret" track exclusive to the Bandcamp version, this was an early attempt at musical cryptography with a translation of the opening paragraph of the Old Testament overlayed with a recording of a Rosicrucian chant of unknown origin. The time of 4:28 is the birthday of my late mother who wanted to name me Adam until she realized what my initials would have been once she attached her preferred middle name of Scott.

Tracks 2-5, 13, 15 have been previously issued as singles. Early versions of 2-6, 15 were published on the internet between 1998 and 2001.

about

J. M. Smig Salem, Massachusetts

The musical equivalent of the guy at the party who offends everyone by mooning the camera (but guess what everyone does to the camera minutes later), Smig is the Witch City's composer laureate (not a difficult achievement, in all honesty).

"[C]ontemporary music for the bizarre at heart...[His] electronica and classical works operate in a style unlike any other."
